Don’t Let Your Discs Degenerate: Newport Beach Chiropractor
As we get older, the discs in our spine tend to experience degeneration, losing their cushioning ability and leading to pain in the neck and/or back. Eighty percent of adults over 80 years of age experience this pain.
The good news is that chiropractic can help slow degeneration of the discs.
A recent study in Osaka, Japan, explored the factors contributing to faster degeneration of spinal discs. The study was conducted by Mie University Graduate School of Medicine in Japan, Japan’s Osaka University and Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.
The 10-year study followed 197 individuals over the age of 65 who live in Miyagawa, Japan. Researchers measured their disc height at two-year intervals and identified three factors that increase the likelihood of disc degeneration:
- Being female
- Having radiographic knee osteoarthritis
- Presence of low back pain when the study began
Chiropractic can’t do anything about your gender, but it can help with the other two factors. Consider this study of 43 individuals with osteoarthritic knee pain, published in The Journal of the Canadian Chiropractic Association. Half the patients received chiropractic treatment three times a week for a total of two weeks; the other half did not. The patients who experienced the treatment said they experienced fewer symptoms, had greater knee mobility, and felt it was easier to “perform general activities.”
As for back pain, chiropractors are experts at reducing back pain, particularly chiropractors trained in Chiropractic BioPhysics (CBP). CBP, the most researched and results-oriented chiropractic technique, can improve or even restore normal spinal structure, through adjustment, exercise and “spinal remodeling.”
Only a small percentage of dedicated and highly educated chiropractors – including Dr. Nona Djavid of Wellness Choice Center in Newport Beach – are certified to practice CBP. Dr. Djavid has helped thousands of Newport Beach, Irvine, Newport Coast, Corona Del Mar, and Costa Mesa, California, residents live healthier lives.
